Makeup Diaries: Discouragement to Excitement.

Hi everyone! My names Melina Olmedo and I am currently working on getting my Associates in Science with an emphasis in Cosmeotology. THEY HAVE THAT?! Lol I know, I said the same thing and I'm actually pretty excited that it exists because I can please my mother with the schooling portion but still am able to pursue my passion which is hair and makeup. Anyways this is my first time doing a blog and I'm pretty excited about it. I apologize if this first post is a bit wordy I just want to explain and reference a few things that I'd probably bring up again down the line and first and formost introduce myself. I really hope you all enjoy this blog and if not..well I'm sorry xD So on with the portion refferring to the title.

So I recieved my certificate of completion from MicMakeup school about a month ago. My friend rachel, also known as sukitron5000, (check out her blog shes amazing) had found out about this school and after researching we decided to give it a try. Long story short after stress and overcoming a few difficulties along the way we made it to the class and were a bit dissappointed. Honestly folks if you dont have a basic idea about how to do makeup don't take a MicMakeup class. Reasons why: 1)they are not very organized 2)It's way too expensive for what they cover and 3) You realise that what they cover in the five six hours you are there is what you've already known from experience. Don't get me wrong, it may have been alot better if it were more put together and organized but I guess they were barely getting started.

My advice to all of you is to really research on a class that you're thinking about taking. Know what it is you're paying for and know what others think about it. Also know what skill level you are at before attempting a class. You definatly want to be able to get your moneys worth. The best thing about that class was being able to take it with rachel and still recieving my certificate after.
WHERE THE DISCOURAGEMENT STARTED:
It was about a week or so after I recieved my certificate that I started to become discouraged because I realised how slow things were taking off, I know! And it'd only been a week! Anywho I went into it expecting things to turn out a certain way but they didn't and that was my first mistake. I went all about it in an unrealistic way. First off all, things dont just happen you have to make them happen. In regards to that, I realised I needed to advertise and get myself out there. How? Facebook. If you have a resource use it, right? Especially if its free xD. I made my page http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Make-up-and-Hair-by-Melina/199212903481347 and am pretty content with it. Sure it isn't extravagent but I am able to put up projects I worked on i.e. photoshoots or anyother event where my makeup/hairstyle services were needed. Guys a FB page is super helpful! I definatly recommend it to anyone who's starting off. I was asked by a friend do work on a photoshoot with her. I decided I would provide my services free of charge if she provided me with the shots for my portfolio, they're still not all up yet. Shoot went ok, I'm not going to lie I was a bit dissappointed. Then again some people are not cut out to take the lead and struggle with organizing things. Frustrated with the disorganization I decided to do what I went there to do and that was to transform the models into zombies and werewolfs, in according to what the photographer had in mind. In the end I was happy with my portion of the work and the feedback I recieved, it made working on four people in a few hours all worth the while. Why? Because I enjoyed it. Sure I stressed, but that's how you know when you trully love what you do, when no matter what rough patch gets in your way, you still push through and work to the best of your ability. I enjoyed working with the models, all with different personalities, and I enjoyed being present for the shoot doing touch ups in the woody area. T'was an experience! And if it wasn't for the shoot and my FB page I wouldn't have gotten all those likes in a week or an amazing offer! Thats right offer. I recieved an email the other day from a photographer who said he liked my work and that he'd like for me to do makeup for his shoots and videos. How awesome is that? I was so excited that someone had contacted ME and wanted me to work with him? It felt good to be able and tell my mom, "see I can get work," and best of all it'd be a paying gig!. I'm really looking forward to it and the project should happen in no longer than a month because he is still writting up his scripts. I'll make sure to post everything up. With that said; dont give up! Sure you're going to get discouraged every once and a while, but it'll work out as long as you give it your all. Advertise whatever way you can, do free gigs and just dont give up. Also its great to have an awesome support system. My family(some friends included) and Rachel  are mine.  Keep your head up and do what you love. I'm sorry if this seems rushed but I'm going to have to cut it short on account of something coming up. I bought makeup! And I'll tell you all about it in the next blog. Bye Thanks!!

Here are a few pictures from "behind the scenes" of the photoshoot.
